Background of the Study

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are crucial to the economic development of local government areas like Shendam LGA, providing jobs and driving economic activities. One of the most effective tools for SMEs to make informed business decisions is Cost-Volume-Profit (CVP) analysis, which helps in understanding the relationships between costs, sales volume, and profits. This study seeks to explore the role of CVP analysis in decision-making for SMEs in Shendam LGA.

Statement of the Problem

Many SMEs in Shendam LGA struggle to make informed decisions regarding pricing, production levels, and cost management due to limited understanding of financial tools like CVP analysis. As a result, businesses often face challenges such as low profitability and inefficient resource utilization. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of CVP analysis in assisting SME owners in making strategic decisions.

Aim and Objectives of the Study

Aim: To evaluate the role of Cost-Volume-Profit (CVP) analysis as a decision-making tool for SMEs in Shendam LGA.
Objectives:

  1. To assess the extent to which SMEs in Shendam LGA use CVP analysis for decision-making.
  2. To examine the impact of CVP analysis on pricing, production, and profitability decisions in SMEs.
  3. To identify the challenges SMEs face in implementing CVP analysis effectively.

Research Questions

  1. To what extent do SMEs in Shendam LGA use CVP analysis for decision-making?
  2. How does CVP analysis impact pricing, production, and profitability decisions in SMEs in Shendam LGA?
  3. What challenges do SMEs in Shendam LGA face in applying CVP analysis to their decision-making processes?

Research Hypothesis

  1. H₀: CVP analysis does not significantly impact decision-making in SMEs in Shendam LGA.
  2. H₀: There is no significant relationship between the use of CVP analysis and profitability in SMEs in Shendam LGA.
  3. H₀: Challenges in implementing CVP analysis do not significantly affect decision-making in SMEs in Shendam LGA.

Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to the understanding of how CVP analysis can enhance decision-making in SMEs, improving their profitability and long-term sustainability in Shendam LGA.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The study will focus on SMEs in Shendam LGA. Limitations may include the lack of awareness or reluctance of SMEs to share financial data due to privacy concerns.
